Stress Awareness Day 2023

These days, stress has become a frequent part of day-to-day life. We often accept it as a part of our daily routine, thinking that a little stress is normal. However, it's important to realise that too much stress can have a detrimental effect on both our mental and physical wellbeing.

Stress Awareness Day, marked every November, is an opportunity to raise awareness about stress, its impact, and how we can manage it effectively.

What is stress?

Stress is a natural response to life's challenges. It's the body's way of preparing to face a threat or danger, commonly known as the fight-or-flight response. In small doses, stress can be beneficial, helping us stay alert and focused. However, when stress becomes overwhelming, it can lead to a variety of health problems, both physical and mental.

The theme of Stress Awareness Day 2023 is 'Stress and Wellbeing at Work.' The workplace is a common source of stress for many individuals, with factors such as long hours, conflict with colleagues and high expectations contributing to the problem. Not only that, but with the introduction of remote working, and the expectation of being at the end of your phone 24/7, it’s hard to form boundaries and protect ourselves from stress and burnout. Which is why, now more than ever, it is important to raise awareness about these issues and promote healthier work environments.

What are the signs of stress?

It's important to be aware of the signs of stress in both ourselves and those around us. Some common indicators of stress include:

  • Physical symptoms: These may include headaches, muscle tension, digestive issues, and changes in sleep patterns.
  • Emotional changes: Stress can lead to mood swings, irritability, and increased anxiety or depression.
  • Changes in behaviour: People under stress may exhibit changes in their eating habits, substance abuse, or withdrawal from social activities.
  • Cognitive effects: Stress can impact concentration and decision-making abilities, often leading to reduced productivity.

Managing Stress

The good news is that if you are aware you are struggling with stress, whatever the level, there are ways to manage it. Here are some key strategies:

  • Self-awareness: Recognising your stress triggers is the first step in managing stress effectively. Journaling or seeking professional help can be valuable in this process.
  • Mindfulness: Trying different mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga can help you stay present and calm in stressful situations.
  • Exercise: Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Even a short walk can make a difference.
  • Healthy lifestyle: A balanced diet and enough sleep are important when it comes to managing stress. Avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol can also contribute to a healthier mindset.
  • Asking for help: Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or a mental health professional. They can provide support, guidance, and a listening ear.

Stress Awareness Day is a reminder that being stressed and overwhelmed is not ok, and that we should take steps to look after our wellbeing.
