Tips to recharge this festive period.

You know that saying 'Christmas gets earlier every year'? Well, this year it seemed to feel especially early.
With the 'big day’ only days away, it may feel like it’s been a long time coming, for some more than others. We all know somebody who dusts off the Christmas decs the moment the Halloween pumpkins are put away. But in 2023, Christmas seems to have arrived even earlier, with more and more people eager for some festive magic and a well-deserved break.
With the memory of pandemic Christmases still raw, the cost-of-living crisis, and what feels like daily ‘breaking news’ bringing its own stresses, it’s no surprise that we’re all simply exhausted. Over the last few years we have as a country suffered a collective trauma, from which many of us are still recovering.
Which is why people are seeing the festive season as something to look forward to, willing it to come quicker for that much-needed respite and a chance to spend time with the people we love.
Of course, trying to make it the ‘best Christmas ever’ brings its own stresses. So, it’s important to look after yourself and use what time you have off to recharge.
Here are some tips for taking care of yourself and avoiding Christmas stress over the festive period, however you’re spending it.
1. Remember to put yourself first: Don't always put yourself last. Among the wrapping, making of memories, meal prep and visiting, remember that you deserve some kindness too. Take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy activities that bring you joy, and not just do things that make everyone happy.
2. Spend time with those who charge you up, not those who bring you down: This time of year often comes with lot of socialising, and it's okay to pick events that bring joy rather than those that drain your energy. If you struggle when it comes to setting boundaries, these sentences might help.
3. Set realistic expectations and boundaries: Trying to create the oh-so-perfect memories is stressful, we can’t do everything. Set realistic expectations for yourself and others, and don't be afraid to set boundaries. Remember, sometimes the best memories come from the most imperfect moments and are the memories that can make you laugh about them for years to come.
4. Embrace Hygge: Social media does have some good points, after all it brought us hygge, the Danish saying for a cosiness that brings contentment and a feeling of wellbeing. Whether it's snuggling up with a warm drink in front of the fire, enjoying some comfort food, or simply being present in the moment, try to set aside time to enjoy the things that make you feel relaxed and content.
As the song goes, the festive season can be the most wonderful time of the year, so make sure it’s wonderful for you, rather than burning yourself out and making it wonderful for everyone else.
