Mastering Boundaries

What are boundaries?

Boundaries are limits and rules we set for ourselves. A boundary at work could look like not working on your lunch break or putting your work phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ during your personal hours. A boundary within a relationship could be making time for yourself or walking away from an argument.

It's important to set boundaries in all aspects of our lives. Not only are boundaries healthy, but essential. Setting boundaries is a form of self-care.

Don’t be afraid to set boundaries. Remember, the people who get annoyed at your boundaries are the ones who benefitted from you not having any.

Setting boundaries is important, there is no doubt about it. Depending on the situation or circumstance, you will have to set boundaries in different ways.

Five types of boundaries.

Emotional - Limits that protect you from being emotionally manipulated or drained by others.
Financial - Proactive and protective limitations you set for the use of your money.
Mental - The personal limit or barrier that you establish to protect your mental wellbeing.
Physical - An expectation of touch or not. Also includes unwanted comments/opinions.
Time
– The restriction that you set around the amount of time you will spend on something.

Do you want to set healthy boundaries, but don’t know where to start?

The thought of setting boundaries can feel overwhelming, but you can make it easier for yourself by setting small ones, in a way that makes you feel the most comfortable. After all, that’s what setting boundaries is all about!

You might find it is the small boundaries that have the biggest impact on your everyday life.

Here are five simple ways of setting yourself boundaries.

  1. Say “No” more!
  2. Book time out for yourself and protect it.
  3. When it comes to social media, limit how much time you will spend on it.
  4. Also, unfollow pages that you find triggering.
  5. Separate home from work.

A good way to set boundaries is to trust your gut and be true to your own feelings and comfort. Do what is right for you!
