World Mental Health Day and
The Westerly Club Anniversary Programme Launch
While we are more than aware that mental health doesn’t resign itself or its affects to appearing on just one day throughout the year, we do champion the fact that October 10 is always World Mental Health Day.
Recognised by the World Health Organisation annually, each year is themed, set by the World Federation for Mental Health. For 2021 we’re talking about ‘Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality’.
As much as we feel as though people are ‘done’ talking about it, there’s no getting around the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on people’s mental health. In some groups, including health and other frontline workers, students, people living alone, and those with pre-existing mental health conditions, have been particularly affected. However, despite all we’ve been through over the past 18-months and more, there is some cause for optimism.
During the World Health Assembly in May 2021, governments from around the world recognized the need to scale up quality mental health services at all levels and endorsed WHO’s Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2030, including the Plan’s updated implementation options and indicators for measuring progress.
It’s time to capitalize on this renewed energy among government leaders to make quality mental health care for all a reality. World Mental Health Day presents an opportunity for government leaders, civil society organizations and many others to talk about the steps they are already taking and that they intend to take in support of this goal.
From our point of view, we have always strived to do that in our own right, working to be THE gold standard in mental health support. During the pandemic the need for our services soared, a bittersweet fact in terms of business, with a lot of men coming forward in need of emotional support.
It was at this time that we launched The Westerly Club. A men’s online community where discussions about emotional wellbeing and mental health were safe to have. A safe space where men aged 16 and above could find likeminded folk as well as peers and expert support, all entirely free of charge.
Now that the community has been running, and organically growing for a whole year, we have an incredible new offering to announce. As promised, we have been working on a new programme of events, activities, and benefits that our Westerly’s can enjoy free of charge both in person and online.
Accessible to everyone in the group no matter where you are in the world, some of the new additions will be taking place religiously, others will be more ad hoc and can be accessed when or Westerly’s truly need them.
From October 10 – World Mental Health Day – please join in with our #WesterlyWalks #WesterlyTalks #WesterlyFitness #WesterlyWisdom #DaybreakBrewandBagel and #HeadersNVolleys. For the full rundown of The Westerly Club and find out how to access the group and our free programme, click here.
